HOPE FOR YOUR CHILD!

Are you having a difficult time raising your child, especially with regard to the child’s behavior in general? A lot of children may be found to fall in the category of forgetful pupils who can’t seem to recall things they were told or materials they read a few hours or even minutes ago. Some children have trouble sitting still. Others squirm, fidget, and are excessively hyperactive. In certain circumstances, some children with these collective traits may interrupt others often or speak at inappropriate times. This could possibly be heartbreaking as every parent seeks to have children without anything interfering with their school and home life.

With the above mentioned symptoms, we want to highlight the Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in this blog post without any direct medical diagnosis. This disorder is characterized by inattention hyperactivity and impulsivity. Surprisingly, 50% of children diagnosed with ADHD are likely to suffer from other psychiatric disorders like depression and anxiety. And this comes in three subtypes which would be helpful if you will take your time to consider; one of which is the Attention deficit disorder (ADD) which has predominantly lack of attention to detail, unorganization, difficulty finishing tasks, and challenges with following instructions and conversations as to its symptoms. From our research, genetics have been linked to the development of ADHD (Afeti and Nyarko, 2017).

However, we also found out that, brain injury, environmental exposures during pregnancy - such as alcohol or tobacco – and premature birth are also causes of ADHD. A brain injury could occur during childbirth or an accidental happening when the child is still very young.

I have personally witnessed parents give up on their children because they feel there is nothing to be done to help them. I sat in class with someone who displayed most of these symptoms and it rather became a burden on teachers and close friends as we could not tell what exactly the problem and solution is. Obviously, there was no adequate knowledge to inform us about a possible disorder in this friend. In the end, it was attributed to a superstitious belief. And this young boy dropped out of school.

But there is no cause for alarm. ADHD can be treated! Two of the most common of these are behavioral therapy and medical prescriptions. Additional resources such as parent training can be beneficial. You can also ensure that the child gets adequate sleep and physical activity that has a healthy diet.

So you see, there is no need to punish your child and be hard on him/her when you see some of the symptoms mentioned earlier in this blog post. Instead, take into consideration these few tips provided in this blog and take the necessary steps to help your child. The prevalence of this disorder in Africa alone is 5.4% and 8.7% among primary school children.
